December 4th was an pretty blustery day, but then again, pretty typical for Northern Michigan standards and not too bad of a day to deliver the last of the Bay Breeze boats to haul out. In the marina the wind indicator was reading 21-28 knots but things died down a bit after rounding the point and heading north towards Northport Bay Boatyard where a hearty c…

Six Bay Breeze boats were used this fall in the filming of "A Year in Mooring" starring Josh Lucas (Sweet Home Alabama, Glory Road, and a bunch more). The films producers selected the boats primarily to be used in the background while docked at the Bower’s Harbor Yacht Club Marina. The boats selected were West Wind, Midnight Magic, Wild Goose, Windfall, Magic Flute and Betty Ann. “Magic Flute” can be seen sailing off into the sunset in one scene and “Wild Goose” is in the lighted boat parade sce…

When an adventure begins, usually you envision in your mind how you think it will go…and that’s what makes it an adventure…it never goes like you think it will.
Our adventure began at 4am in the Detroit Metro airport, on our way to Puerto Rico. The objective: prep and launch eight boats in Puerto Rico’s Del Rey Marina boatyard, and then deliver 2 catamarans safely to the
CYOA Yacht Charter base located in St Thomas’ Frenchtown district.…

The conditions were too perfect for a long anticipated venture out to the Manitou Islands located about 10 miles off Northern Michigan's west coast (the town of Leland). To get there by sailboat would require a long commitment since our sailboat wasn't near the islands. So on an unusually calm and sunny day, we launched the "work boat", a 20' Robalo…

If its possible to overdose on boat browsing, the Annapolis Boat Show is the place that will happen. It was cool to see the highest of the high end boats and all the amazing innovations that go with the price tags but my favorites are the boats that appeal to the practical side of me. But that is probably why I have owned mostly station wagons my whole life.…

With temperatures and leaves falling, it seems like the perfect time to do some sailing. All of our sailing this summer seemed to be cold weather sailing so taking a long weekend in October to play in the water seems the natural step---perhaps even schlepping some boats up to Northport??? November is the latest I have ever been sailing and I sure would not be opposed to try for December in Michigan!

It's late September and I'm finally catching my breath after another fast-paced season. Actually, this is the first chance I've had in months to see what the rest of the Community has been up to! Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for contributing and keep the momentum rolling! This is a great time of year with still plenty of good sailing on the horizon. And I'm sure the fall colors will not be disappointing when seen from under sail as well. I'm really looking forward to some brisk fall sai…

Finally, finally, finally!
We are heading up to the Bay Breeze area this coming Saturday (7-18) and will be staying in T.C.-ville for a week. Kelley and I will definitely stop by Bay Breeze and see how the gang is doing.
I can hardly wait!
Cheers!

It's cool and overcast here in Lansing. Not a stereotypical Fourth but we've never been a stereotypical country.
Planning on getting out on the water for a sail tomorrow out on Lake Michigan.
Here's to all our fellow BayBreezer's, wishing you a very happy, safe, and sailo-fillin' Fourth of July!!

Yes, I like winter. I like snow. And I like all the activities it offers. However, the extremely COLD temperatures are what I could do without. It's getting to be that time of year here in the northern latitudes when cabin fever and island fever start running rampant. The first part of February things are still fairly normal, but come the end of the month and the beginning of March...oh boy, that 's when the stir craze has really set in.
So what does one do? Hop on a flight to "St. Somewhere",…

Here in the northern latitudes, as much as we enjoy the snow and all the winter related activities, at some point we feel a little island fever coming on. For some that means a trip to the lower lats and some fun in the sun. For others, well it's making the most of a cold Saturday evening in January.
A big thanks to
Scott's Harbor Grill for hosting

We've brought a frigid front with us to North Carolina to pick up our 22 ft sailboat from some friends, Gary and Ann who have often sailed with us, so it is just 35 degrees today as we prepare to haul the little Balia out of the water in Southport (that's Cape Fear) and put it on its trailer. Monday we leave for the hopefully warmer climates of the Florida Keys. This is the first port on what is a shortened version of the Great Circle trip we had initially planned for our 42 ft Balia. In prepari…

It was a longSanta bow sail from the North Pole but Santa finally arrived in Traverse City to make an appearance at the Grand Traverse Yacht Club Kids Christmas Party. For many years Santa, an avid sailor, has sailed his 1968 Cal 40 along with his hearty crew of elves (many of which moonlight as Bay Breeze instructors and captains) to the delight of all the kids awaiting shoreside.
“Twenty degrees, heavy snow at times, winds picked up considerbly by the end of the cruise: conditions were perfec…
