If its possible to overdose on boat browsing, the Annapolis Boat Show is the place that will happen. It was cool to see the highest of the high end boats and all the amazing innovations that go with the price tags but my favorites are the boats that appeal to the practical side of me. But that is probably why I have owned mostly station wagons my whole life. I like the utilitarian sailing vessels. The ones that are designed to sail well by giving up a little down below in accommodation. Maybe I'm a bit traumatized by maintaining and servicing boats over the years but minimal exterior teak brings me joy as well as good access to mechanicals. Cheers to Island Packet for putting practical flooring at the bottom of the companionway stairs as well as in the galley, leaving the teak sole for the less travelled areas. How about the hooks and drain pans under the stairway on the Hunter 49 where you can hang your wet foulies without trashing the interior? Thats the kind of stuff that makes you want to go off sailing using a boat for what its designed for. Not hanging out at the dock maintaining the look of the boat. Then again, if I was anywhere near the tax bracket to afford some of those super-high end yachts, I might have someone else service the engine. But I'd still stock the cooler with PBR to keep it real. Oh to dream...
