The conditions were too perfect for a long anticipated venture out to the Manitou Islands located about 10 miles off Northern Michigan's west coast (the town of Leland). To get there by sailboat would require a long commitment since our sailboat wasn't near the islands. So on an unusually calm and sunny day, we launched the "work boat", a 20' Robalo Center Console, and powered across glassly waters. The experience was surreal. The scenery and beauty of the islands and the waters surrounding rivalled anything I've seen in all my years travelling the Caribbean and beyond. And to think it was right here in my own backyard; I just never got around to seeing it before.
